League Merit 2011
There was a great turnout of 25 young bowlers at the Botanic Gardens representing the clubs within the West Lancs & Sefton Junior Bowls League (Windmill, Botanic and Formby Legion) for the 2011 League Merit Competition, sponsored by Thurstons of Liverpool . The first round saw round robin matches being played in 5 groups. The youngest group was won well by 10 year old Emma Gill, who was unbeaten. Her brother Matthew Gill also won his group unbeaten, but it was closer in the other groups. These were won by Mike Daley, Robert Blackwood and Jack Graves - Robert and Jack just getting through on points difference.
A play off was held between the winners of Groups 1 and 2 for a semi final place. In the first to 9 game, Emma gave Mike a real shock by racing into a 9-0 lead, only for Mike to keep his nerve and defeat his younger opponent 9-8.
The semi finals saw Matthew sweep Mike aside 11-3 and Jack Graves come through a tense match 11 - 10 against Robert.
The final was won by Matthew 15-7 and he took the trophy as well as a new pair of bowls courtesy of Thurstons . He has decided to give these to his sister who currently does not have her own pair.
